The Office of Patents and Licensing was developed to encourage the corporate sector to facilitate the support of the basic research done at NYBC's Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI) and convert the results into new products and processes that ultimately contribute to public benefit. A hallmark of these activities is New York Blood Center's development and licensing of Solvent/Detergent Technology for the Inactivation of Lipid-Enveloped Viruses (e.g. HIV, HCV) in plasma, blood derivatives and biotechnology products. Since its development in the early 1980s. the solvent/detergent (S/D) method has become one of the most prevalent and widely published methods of virus inactivation in use today.
